2 The Treasurer is the custodian of all church funds
The Treasurer is the custodian of all church funds. He or she collects, counts, deposits, records, reconciles, remits funds and reports to the church board concerning the financial activities of the church on a regular basis. The Treasurer

3 It is important to note that the work of the treasurer is a specialized, vital ministry in which he or she exercises his or her spiritual gifts for the benefit of the church. The whole congregation and the conference/mission office will benefit directly and indirectly form this work.

4 It is therefore important that the treasurer views his or her function as a spiritual ministry.

5 Collects Funds: The treasurer should collect all tithes, offerings, trusts funds, gifts etc. and issue the appropriate receipts. Functions:

6 Counts the funds received weekly:
 No one person should count the money. The money should never be in the presence of anyone person. Make sure the amount written on the envelope corresponds with the total amount of money inside the envelope. If it does not, make a notation on the envelope; do not erase the amount the giver writes on the envelope. Contact the person so they can make the correction.

7 Make out the deposit slip immediately of all monies received
Make out the deposit slip immediately of all monies received. The total deposit should equal the total received. Make the deposit right away. Return the tithe envelope/receipt to each contributor after review by the local church auditor. The treasurer and auditor should sign or stamp the envelopes.

8 Records: All monies should be recorded in the ledger regardless of the source of funds. The name of each contributor and amount contributed according to the intended designation.

9 Reports: The treasurer is responsible for the preparation of monthly financial statements. These should be presented to the church Board monthly and at Business meetings. The business meeting reports should cover the financial activity for the year to date.

10 To facilitate proper or accurate reporting, the treasurer needs to do reconciliation. This involves both bank statements and cheque books with the financial statement.

11 Remitting Funds to the Conference/Mission office:
Monthly remittance of mission funds should be sent. The reports should reach the Mission office by the eight of the following month.

12 The collection of funds
Step one—counting The monies should be counted as soon as possible after the collection of the tithes and offerings. The counting of the monies should not be done by one individual

13 After the deacons collect the monies, the deacons are to count the loose offering and put it in an envelope and write the amount on it. The treasurer who counts the money in the envelope should sign the envelop to verify that it is correct.

14 Step two—deposit the money
The monies should be deposited as soon as possible after the collection of the tithes and offering. The same person should not do the deposit week after week.

15 Step Three—recording in the ledger
At a convenient time the treasurer will enter the envelopes in the ledger. Enter transactions (expenses) as they are done in the ledger

17 The report is to reach the office by the tenth of the month

19 The auditor’s main function is one of internal control.

20 Ensure that a proper internal control system is in place and functioning within the treasury department. Checks to see if the funds recorded on the tithe & offering envelopes/receipts are recorded in the ledger. Main Functions:

21 Ensures that periodic collection of funds are deposited in like amount and on a timely basis.
Verifies the balancing of the columns in the ledger Verifies that expenditures are properly approved.
