1 PEARLING for success: Introducing Analysis in year 9
Jonathan Peel JLS 2015 Friday, 01 February 2019

2 Question: to what extent do you think Hardy is a good officer?
PEARLS are made from GRIT – it takes time and does not always work. GRIT is a synonym for hard work! P Make a POINT E Support it with EVIDENCE (a quotation) A ANALYSE the evidence R RESPOND to it personally/ as an audience AND RELATE back to the question L Link forward to next paragraph to be written. Jonathan Peel JLS 2015

3 Point Write a thesis statement – a clear point in answer to the question that you go on to evidence with a quotation. (This statement can be lifted directly from your introduction, or re-phrased.) e.g. “In the opening scene, Hardy is found relaxing, drying a sock over a candle. Despite the imminent German attack he seems utterly unprepared to defend his trench” Jonathan Peel JLS 2015

4 Evidence Your evidence must support the point you are making! E.g.
In response to Osborne’s enquiry about the sleeping arrangements he replies “I don’t know. The sergeant major sees to that” Jonathan Peel JLS 2015

5 Analysis You have a quotation. ZOOM IN to the key words to analyse it by doing one or more of the following: Comment on the vocabulary used Comment on imagery Use of punctuation? Is there a literary technique being used? . Jonathan Peel JLS 2015

6 Zooming in The quotation will be quite long. Select the key word or phrase that really proves your point. Show your working… His comment that “the sergeant major sees to that”, referring to the men under his command shows a failing of his responsibility as an officer. He should have knowledge of these things but does not seem to care – he has his comfy bed! Jonathan Peel JLS 2015

7 Let’s check that: In the opening scene, Hardy is found relaxing, drying a sock over a candle. Despite the imminent German attack he seems utterly unprepared to defend his trench. In response to Osborne’s enquiry about the sleeping arrangements he replies “I don’t know. The sergeant major sees to that”. His comment that “the sergeant major sees to that”, referring to the men under his command shows a failing of his responsibility as an officer. He should have knowledge of these things but does not seem to care – he has his comfy bed! Jonathan Peel JLS 2015

8 Response/Relation to title?
What is the audience’s (or your) emotional response? Here, it might be: Hardy has seemed too relaxed and jokey all along Sherriff is contrasting Hardy and Osborne to set up a clear difference between the characters. How can we relate to the question? An Officer’s first responsibility is to his men, not to himself Hardy shows little respect towards Osborne, who is trying to do his job properly. Jonathan Peel JLS 2015

9 P+E+A+R+__ In the opening scene, Hardy is found relaxing, drying a sock over a candle. His failure to put his men before himself, claiming the best bed in the dug out whilst they are ignored is a failure to acknowledge the first responsibility of any officer. LINK: Not only does he fail to look after his men, but he also… Jonathan Peel JLS 2015

10 LINK LINK: Not only does he fail to look after his men, but he also…
In this sentence I refer back to the point made and also begin to link to the next point. A JANUS sentence! Jonathan Peel JLS 2015

11 LINKING effectively JANUS: Roman God of “beginnings and transitions”
He had two faces and “looked both forward and back” Jonathan Peel, after John Tomsett, JLS 2105

12 We can use this idea in our writing
When linking paragraphs, try to refer in both directions whenever possible. Your plan should have established clear links between material. Help the reader by referencing both what has gone before as well as what you are moving on to say. Jonathan Peel, after John Tomsett, JLS 2105

13 Another idea: What do these lines tell us about Hardy?
Look at this passage and the comment made: Hardy: You are a fussy old man. … 115 rifle grenades – I shouldn’t use them if I were you; they upset Jerry and make him offensive. Besides, in any case, they’re rusty.” What do these lines tell us about Hardy? I think there are 3 possible points here… which will you make? Remember to ZOOM IN! Jonathan Peel JLS 2015

14 Don’t forget your PEARLs, girls
Don’t forget your PEARLs, girls! But, boys: other forms of analysis are available, such as Peeing or Peeling. Jonathan Peel JLS 2015
