Effective Communication ●Fernando De Maio is a Professor of Sociology at DePaul University and supports the claim that segregated communities in Chicago have higher rates of newborns that have low birth weights. He has also compared data from different neighborhoods in Chicago which supports the claim. ●There has been complementary data collected in segregated areas on low birth weights in Toronto, which showed that even though their “worst off” areas demonstrated low birth weight newborns, the statistics were still higher (11%) than Chicago’s 14%. Evidence Based Practice Policy ●Interventions to accomplish this goal identified include: reduce the amount of tobacco use and secondhand smoke, alcohol consumption and exposure to environmental pollutants ●Smoking cessation and alcohol consumption: health promotion, restoration and maintenance ●Environmental pollutants: health promotion Person-centered Health Outcomes ●Healthy People 2020 has identified an Objective of reducing low birth weight and very low birth weight newborns.
