1 Jot Thoughts Lets Practice

2 Jot thoughts Each person grab 3 post it notes Task:
Brainstorms components of Earth (at any level)

3 Organize your thoughts
Group the components of Earth into groups based on things they have in common (the number of groups does not matter)   How could you name or label them?

4 Earth's Systems 1. The Atmosphere 2. The Lithosphere
In this class, we will learn about 4 specific systems that make up the Earth. 1. The Atmosphere 2. The Lithosphere 3. The Hydrosphere 4. The Biosphere These are the 4 basic spheres  Image is from the following website: 4

5 gases

6 The Atmosphere • The atmosphere is ALL THE GAS that is surrounding the Earth. This includes the air that you breathe. • Scientists split the atmosphere into different layers.  • Extends 100's of kilometers above the planet. Images are from the following website: Atmo means “vapor”, so this is the sphere of (water) vapor. 6

7 The Atmosphere • Many different gasses are found in the Atmosphere.
• Most abundant gas is... • Second most abundant is... • Others include  Water Vapor Carbon Dioxide Argon Methane Images are from the following website: Atmo means “vapor”, so this is the sphere of (water) vapor. 7

8 The Lithosphere • Lithosphere is talking about the crust of the Earth and the part of the Earth that is right under the crust that is called the Mantle. Image is from the website: 8

9 The Lithosphere • The land that makes up all the continents on earth is called CONTINENTAL CRUST. It is pretty thick, like kilometers. • There is also crust on the floor of the ocean called OCEANIC CRUST. This is a bit skinnier, between kilometers thick.

10 The Lithosphere • The Lithosphere is always in motion, but it is very gradual and usually takes hundreds to thousands of years to notice. The movement of the Earth's crust is known as PLATE TECTONICS.  Image is from the website: 10

11 The Hydrosphere •Hydrosphere = ALL THE WATER on Earth, in all its forms (Gas, solid, liquid) • 97% of Earth's water is in the Oceans.  • Most of the freshwater is frozen in glaciers and ice caps. • A very small fraction of Earth's water makes up lakes and river  Image is from the website: Hydro means “water”, so this is the sphere of water. 11

12 THE WATER CYCLE = water is always being
THE WATER CYCLE = water is always being transferred from place to place

13 The Biosphere •It includes ALL LIVING THINGS on Earth. •“Bio” = living
•All types of organisms are included: Archaea, Bacteria, Protists, Fungi,  Plants, Animals.  The places on Earth that  are occupied by living things are called BIOMES. Image is from the following website: Bio means “life”, so this is the sphere of life. 13

14 Rally Robin  Let's practice! With a partner, use the pictures to describe the systems of the earth. RALLY= partners ROBIN= talking Take turns going back and forth

15

16 Modern humans? Only a few thousand...
Remember: Earth's Systems are COMPLICATED, and we still don't know everything about them. The Earth has been around for BILLIONS of years!!! Modern humans? Only a few thousand...

17 Earth's Systems Interconnected
Earth systems are INTERCONNECTED – that means that they all have an effect on each other. The Earth system refers to the fact that we use models to look at parts of the Earth, helping us to describe what has happened in the past, what is currently happening, and what might happen in the future. 17

18 Your turn... Table 1: Hurricane Table 2: Forest Fire Table 3: Volcano Table 4: Tornado Table 5: Oil Spill Table 6: Deforestation Table 7: Coal Mining Table 8: Building a school

19 Directions  You and your table mates will focus on the given "disaster" and create a poster on how each system in the earth is effected by that disaster.  Create a concept map with disaster as the center and each system bubble out

20 Directions 1. Purple 2. Yellow 3. Orange 4. Pink
Each person will have a different color marker 1. Purple  2. Yellow  3. Orange  4. Pink  Each color must be equally used- what does that mean? Each person must equally participate!

21 Must have at least 2 effects in each system
