2 Figure 1 Proposed relationship between folate and development of colorectal neoplasia. Based on epidemiological data and clinical trials, folate may have an anti-cancer benefit early in the colorectal adenoma-carcinoma sequence (eg, during tumor initiation) with diminishing influence as neoplasia progresses. Thus, the reduction in cancer risk is most evident in comparing extremes of folate intake when introduced to a population at an early stage of the adenoma-carcinoma sequence.
