Congress created the House Un-American Activities Committee to investigate activities of suspected anarchists, Nazis, fascists, or communists
Investigated the government, armed forces, unions, education

4. The Red Scare Freedom of speech severely limited
Unsubstantiated accusations of communists connections or being spies
Alger Hiss accused for being a Soviet spy even though there was little evidence
Jews Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were convicted of sending secret information about the atomic bomb to the Soviet’s
Executed…Anti-Semitic?

5. Hollywood Blacklist
HUAC targeted the movie industry in which the Hollywood Ten (directors, producers and writers) refused to answer questions by pleading the 5th Amendment
Many Hollywood movie figures were blacklisted due to suspected communists ties and therefore could not find work

6. McCarthyism
Series of reckless accusations made by Senator Joseph McCarthy
Said that America had traitors living in America, not Soviet’s moving to America to spy
Being accused by McCarthy could ruin a person’s life
Lost his power/influence when he wrongly accused the US Army of being full of communists…signaled the end of the Red Scare

7. War production had helped get America out of the Great Depression but America was still in a war (Cold War) and was struggling with domestic problems
Fair Deal: strengthened the New Deal and created new programs
Taft-Hartley Act: outlawed closed shops (a workplace in which only union members could be hired)
Reversed the gains that workers made during the New Deal
Led to the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organization to unite in their efforts

8. Dwight D. Eisenhower in Office
Interstate Highway Act: created highways and expressways that were federally funded to connect the entire nation
Became necessary with the number of cars and growth of suburbs such as Levittown in which William Levitt mass produced affordable homes using the same house plans
