Leveraging the FitBit API to Share Activity Levels with a Trusted Caregiver Hello, my name is Kim Chen. I am a rising junior studying Computer Science at Stetson University. Project 9: Leveraging the Fitbit API to Share Activity Levels with a Trusted Caregiver REU Student: Kim Chen Faculty Mentor(s): Dr. Wisniewski and Dr. Turgut Whether or not end users would be comfortable sharing health data in the context of a caregiving app Goal: Create a caregiving mobile application: “Carebitter” User study Approach: In the context of wearable IoT technology, the goal of this project is to determine: Whether or not end users would be comfortable sharing health data in the context of a caregiving app To accomplish this, we will employ a user study. However, prior to conducting a user study, we first had to build an application for users to test, which is what I started on this summer. Since this is the first year of a multi-year research project, my job was to start developing this mobile application.

Project 9: Leveraging the Fitbit API to Share Activity Levels with a Trusted Caregiver REU Student: Kim Chen Faculty Mentor(s): Dr. Wisniewski and Dr. Turgut Technical Approach Making API Requests Access Token Callback URL OAuth 2.0 Implicit Grant Flow Fitbit API Our application uses the Fitbit API and OAuth 2.0 Implicit Grant Flow for user authorization. After the user is authorized they are redirected back to the application’s callback with an access token which is stored client-side. And then we proceed to make API request with the token.

4 Project 9: Leveraging the Fitbit API to Share Activity Levels with a Trusted Caregiver REU Student: Kim Chen Faculty Mentor(s): Dr. Wisniewski and Dr. Turgut Interface Design Title Screen displaying application logo and slogan Explains to the Fitbit user what the application does, and how they can revoke access whenever they feel necessary Chrome tab for Fitbit login and authorization Screen that allows the Fitbit user to select the type of information they want to share Dashboard which displays the information and shows when it was last updated The end product of my work is a functional mobile app where a Fitbit user can login to their account on another users’ phone. The interface design consists of A title screen and information screen which explains to the Fitbit user what the application does They then login to Fitbit And after the user selects the type of info they want to share Then, on the dashboard, the other user who would be designated as a caregiver would be able to see important information about the last activity of the caregivee, such as heart rate and steps last logged Title Screen displaying application logo and slogan Explains to the Fitbit user what the application does, and how they can revoke access whenever they feel necessary Chrome tab for Fitbit login and authorization Screen that allows the Fitbit user to select the type of information they want to share Dashboard which displays the information and shows when it was last updated

5 Project 9: Leveraging the Fitbit API to Share Activity Levels with a Trusted Caregiver REU Student: Kim Chen Faculty Mentor(s): Dr. Wisniewski and Dr. Turgut Alerts and notifications within the application for when either heart rate or steps fall outside of a certain threshold Future Work Provide a better understanding of the benefits and privacy implications of peer-to-peer sharing of personal health information using IoT devices in the context of caregiving Significance I made considerable progress on this project, though we hope to implement alerts and notifications prior to conducting the user study. Finally, the significance which this work can provide is a better understanding of the benefits and privacy implications of peer-to-peer sharing of personal health information using IoT devices in the context of caregiving
