1 LDL Networking and Learning Session – 20th July 2016

2 Introductions – Who’s Here?
Staff from 8 Local Delivery Leads – new and newer! GMCVO Team Programme Team

3 Ground Rules Confidentiality – do not reveal personal details discussed during the day Respect each other’s views Allow each person to contribute Ensure feedback is constructive Mobile phones to off/silent Any others?

4 Objectives By the end of the session attendees should:
Have a good understanding of what LDLs are doing that is and isn’t working well Have practical examples of ways of working that they could apply to their local projects Feel more confident about dealing with difficulties faced as part of distributing investments

5 Retrospective Prime Directive
Working Principle Retrospective Prime Directive

6 Retrospective Prime Directive
The Retrospective Prime Directive Says: One of the most obvious fears people have when first trying a retrospective is that the ritual will become a negative gripe session, interspersed with blame and counter blame Clearly such an event will not contribute to much learning The key to a constructive successful ritual is assuring that all the participants adhere to the Retrospective Prime Directive

7 Retrospective Prime Directive
‘Regardless of what we discover, we understand and truly believe that everyone did the best job they could, given what they knew at the time, their skills and abilities, the resources available, and the situation at hand.’

8 Survey Results Details of processes circulated – print outs available today

9 Survey Results

10 Survey Results Examples of information being gathered: Satisfaction ratings Photos and videos Different isolation measures (tbc) Details of existing support networks

11 Survey Results

12 Survey Results Examples of other barriers: Time taken to support older people to develop ideas (common across areas) Requests for funding from outside of the selected wards

13 Barriers – How have these been overcome?
Introducing a project ideas form to save people time and filter inappropriate applications Communicating clearly that the LDL is the facilitator rather than the deliverers of projects/ideas Developing signposting resources so that those coming forward with unsuitable ideas can be pointed in the right direction

14 Survey Results Is there anything Ambition for Ageing programme partners could do to help tackle these barriers? Appropriate expectations Support to explore developing universal investments process Sharing experience and good practice

15 Survey Results

16 Survey Results When rejected, proposers are supported to develop a suitable proposal. 1 project has been funded over £2000 with approval from GMCVO – this was for sports equipment. 3 quotes were sought.

17 Questions?

18 Quick Exercise

19 Exercise Are these projects?: Real – funded through Ambition for Ageing Real – take place outside of Ambition for Ageing Fake – We’ve just made them up

20 Discussion Looking at each of the 3 elements of investments, can we answer? What did we do well, that if we don’t discuss we might forget? What did we learn? What should we do differently next time? What still puzzles us?

21 Discussion Please mix yourselves up on the tables so there’s as many LDLs involved in each conversation as possible Make a note of your answers on post-its 30 mins for group discussion 30 mins for feedback

22 Group Discussion What did we do well, that if we don’t discuss we might forget? What did we learn? What should we do differently next time? What still puzzles us? Older people involvement in project design Process for putting forward projects for investment Older people involvement in decision making

23 Break – 10 mins

24 Discussion - Checklist
If we were starting from scratch, what would be the top 10 tips you would give to a new LDL? Discussion – 10 mins Feedback – 10 mins Let’s not be hard on ourselves, remember the retrospective prime directive! Imagine, for example, Trafford or Stockport secured funding to join Ambition for Ageing and wanted to appoint an LDL of their own? This could be a do’s and don’ts list. This could be particularly useful for the three new LDLs who are yet to distribute investments.
