1 Unit 6: Acid-Base Applications Lesson 3: Standards and Titration Curves

2 Standard Solutions Titrations require a solution with accurately known concentration – called a standard solution. Ways to make a standard solution: Dilute a measured amount of a pure, stable (unreactive with chemicals in the air) substance to a precise volume. This is called a primary standard. Titrate a solution with a primary standard to accurately determine its concentration. 10 min

3 Common Primary Standards
The following are most commonly used to prepare primary standards: Potassium hydrogen phthalate (acid) b) Oxalic acid dihydrate (acid) c) Sodium carbonate (base)

4 Brain Break! Find as many words as you can using the letters shown, always using the middle letter. What’s the 9-letter word? publisher

5 Plotting a Titration Curve
Complete #124 on pg. 167 15 min

6 Titration Curve for a Strong Acid and Strong Base
The pH rises almost vertically near the equivalence point. Since a strong acid and a strong base undergo neutralization, the equivalence point is neutral. Thus, an indicator with a transition point near pH=7 is needed. 10 min

7 Homework Pg. 165 #121 and 122
