3.8 Solving Equations Involving Absolute Value
Vocabulary: Absolute Value: Distance from 0 on the # line. Review

Ex 1: Solve for “y”: |y| = 8

To solve equations involving absolute value.
Steps To solve equations involving absolute value. 1.) a. If a number is in the absolute values take the absolute value first. b. If a variable is in absolute values leave it in the absolute values until the end 2.) Clear fractions or decimals 3.)Distribute 4.) Combine like terms 5.) APE 6.)MPE 7.) Take the absolute value of the variable (should have 2 answers the + and -)

Example 2: Solve |m| - 7 = 9 +7 +7 |m| = 16 m = ±16

Ex 3: Solve: 2 |y| + 1 = 15 - 1 2|y| = 14 2 |y| = 7 y = 7 or y = - 7

Ex 4: Solve: |-8| + |y| = |-21| + |2|

Ex 5: Solve: y = 70 or y = - 70

Ex 6:Solve:

Ex 7: Solve: |y| = -7 No Solution
*** Absolute Value is the distance from 0 on the number line. Distance can never be negative. Therefore, there is no solution of a replacement for the variable to make the answer negative. Giving us an answer of no solution.***

Ex 8: Solve: -3|y| + 4 = -11

Ex 9: Solve: -5|y| + 8 = 18 No Solution

Assignment: page 146 8 – 52 even
