Health Care Reform Effects on CFO of Health Systems By Karen Melton, RN,BSN

2 Legislative Impact Changes in leadership approach and focus.
Education on what is changing and how it impacts the company, the employees, and the patients. Increased reimbursement for wellness, prevention, and patient-centered primary care. Financial penalties will occur for hospital acquired conditions, readmissions, and medication errors. With the introduction of Accountable Care Organizations (ACO’s) and bundled payments, overall cost containment is also on the fore front. Increased communication between health systems due to ACO’S to ensure quality cost effective care across the healthcare continuum. This will require integrated computer systems.

3 Access Access to health care will have a focus shift
Electronic medical records will need to be in place to ensure tracking of chronically ill patients to identify problems before hospitalizations occur. Restructuring staff in order to provide remote care which would include tele-monitoring. Focus on preventive care and treatment at home to improve outcomes. Adequate communication between team based medical systems (ACO’s) to insure effective care

4 Quality Health reform promises an increase in quality care.
Health systems are being penalized or rewarded for patient care outcomes. The issue however, with the increase of enrollees into the health system, a greater shortage in medical personal has occurred and is having difficulty keeping up with the demands.

5 Cost How cost containment will be achieved. Reduce hospitalizations
Reduce readmissions Reduce emergency room visits Reduce medical supply cost Reduce medication cost These cost reduction measures will not only save the health system money but it should pass the savings on to the patient.
