1 T.Y.BSc SEMESTER V BOTANY PAPER I UNIT III LOOSE SMUT OF SORGHUM
By Mrs. S. S.HAJIRNIS DEPARTMENT OF BOTANY SATISH PRADHAN DNYANASADHANA COLLEGE,THANE(W)

2 Loose Smut of Sorghum

3 Causal Organism – Spacelotheca cruenta
Systematic position. Kingdom: Fungi, Division: Basidiomycota, Class: Basidiomycetes, Order: Ustilaginales, Family: Ustilaginaceae, Genus: Sphacelotheca

4 Sphacelotheca cruenta
Mycelium is filamentous, branched, multicellular due to septa, monokaryotic or dikaryotic Reproduction by teliospores (hibernating stage of the pathogen) and sporidia in its life cycle Teliospores are spherical or ellipsoidal, tinted, smooth 4.8 x mkm in diameter. At sprouting they give a four-celled basidium with laterally and apically growing sporidia. The Sporidia are spindle-shaped or oblong, 2.8 x 12.7 mkm in size.

5 Pre – Disposing Factors:
Optimal for mass infection of plants during seed germination Temperatures 10 to 32.C. Soil Temperature C Soil humidity 15-20%. Mode of Infection: The infection takes its origin from infected seeds. The infection occurs during only seedling stage of plant development.

6 Symptoms: The affected plants can be detected before the ears come out. They are shorter than the healthy plants with thinner stalks and marked tillering. The ears come out much earlier than the healthy. The glumes are hypertrophied and the ear head gives a loose appearance than healthy. The sorus is covered by a thin membrane which ruptures very early, exposing the spores even as the head emerges from the sheath. External symptoms become apparent immediately after panicle emergence from flag leaf sheath. All ovaries of inflorescences are affected. Smut sori develop on peduncles, glumes, stamens. Their size can reach cm in length and cm in width. After rupture of sorus coat, fungal teliospores disperse, leaving clearly visible central column (columella). A panicle spangled with a lot of teliospores looks like a burnt fire-brand, sharply contrasting with healthy plants.

7 Disease Cycle

8 Disease Cycle

9 Economic significance
The pathogen affects plant growth and development adversely. Grain yield losses correlate well with percentage of the disease distribution in fields. Control measures Cultivation of resistant varieties and hybrids, Seed treatments before sowing.

10 THANK YOU……
