1 The Structure of Metals
Physical Science The Structure of Metals

2 Metallic Bonds The attraction between a metal cation and the shared electrons that surround it. The cations form a lattice held in place by metallic bonds. The number of valence electrons determines the strength of the metal

3 Explaining Properties of Metals
The ability to conduct electric current. A metal has a ready supply of charged particles – a pool of shared electrons Malleability The lattice is flexible because ions shift positions because of the metallic bond.

4 Alloys A mixture of 2 or more elements, at least one of which is a metal. The mixture has the properties of metal.

5 Copper Alloys The Bronze Age was an important era. Made of copper and tin. From BC Brass is another important copper alloy.

6 Steel Alloys The Age of Steel was the 1900’s.

7 Milestones in Metallurgy
Choose 1 event in metallurgy history. 3 minute presentation on materials – including specific properties of the metals/ alloys involved, applications, and people involved.
