Some in the middle class: Most ppl were incredibly poor Is there a better way?

3 England passes laws: Factory Act of 1833 9 & under = illegal to work
Ages 9-12 work 8 hours a day Women & kids could not work in mines (1842), max hours = 10 (1847) Good enough? Problems solved?

4 Unions: groups of workers who work together for better working conditions
Workers’ Advantage: Hard to fire everyone! Strike: stop working Company does NOT produce anything Owner does NOT make $$$ Problems: ppl may work during strike, owners may just wait out workers, violence, can be fired So, unions were NOT always successful either….what else can be done?

5 Socialism The people / gov’t own some of the businesses BUT allows for some private ownership as well Can own your own business BUT gov’t provides a lot of help

6 Socialism EX: Socialized health care – govt provides health insurance for ALL Would you be willing to pay high taxes if it meant that everyone received health care? College paid for by the gov?

7 Define socialism in your own words.

Utilitarianism: Do what is useful or best Reduce income gap (divide between rich & poor) Women vote, increase education, fix prisons Is this a good concept?

9 Out of these ideas: capitalism, utopian society, utilitarianism, or socialism, which one do you think is the best for us today? Give one reason for your answer.
