1 Chemical Compounds Chapter 3 Section 1 Notes

2 Elements Any substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances Sulfur is an element

3 Compounds Two or more elements have been chemically combined
Write down two examples of compounds. Organic vs. Inorganic….what’s the difference?

4 Carbohydrates & Lipids
Are organic compounds A carbohydrate is an energy rich organic compound made of the elements carbon, hydrogen and oxygen . What about sugars and starches? Lipids are energy rich organic compounds made of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. Lipids contain more energy than carbohydrates and are usually stored by the cell for later use.

5 Proteins Proteins are large organic molecules made of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and in some cases sulfur. Proteins are made up of smaller molecules called amino acids. Proteins are used to make up the structure of cells, and form parts of cell membranes. They also make up many organelles within the cell.

6 Nucleic Acids Are long organic molecules made of carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen and phosphorus. Nucleic Acids contain information that allows the cells to carry out all the functions of life. DNA vs. RNA???
