1 English I October 13, 2014

2 Grammar Pattern of the Week
A conjunction connects other words or groups of words. Coordinating conjunctions join similar groups of words (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so- FANBOYS). Subordinating conjunctions join a subordinate clause to a main clause. (after, as, because, before, if, since, though, when, where, while)

3 Prefix: Sub- = under, below, less than Sentence Example: The sublime submarine was new and shiny, certainly not substandard!

4 Conjunctions Practice
Remember the acronym FANBOYS: For-And-Nor-But-Or-Yet-So. Ulysses wants to play for UConn, but he has had trouble meeting the academic requirements. Ulysses spent his summer studying basic math, writing, and reading comprehension. Louisa will wash the sink full of her dirty dishes once her roommate Shane cleans his stubble and globs of shaving cream from the bathroom sink. We looked on top of the refrigerator, where Jenny will often hide a bag of chocolate chip cookies.
