2 Part 1: Classroom Assessment (QIWK)—Background
Classroom: Fourth grade Number of students: 22 QIWK Lists: Level 2, Level 3, & Level 4 How is spelling taught in class: The spelling words are posted at the beginning of the week. The meaning is discussed, the word is used in a sentence, and throughout the week the students do activities with the words.

7 Part 2: Individual Assessment –Observations
John did well with the first two passages. (Beginning First-Grade and Pre-Primer 2) He had a 93% on the Primer passage with 39 wpm. We considered his rate of 39 to be close enough to the expected rate, so we concluded that his “gray area” level was at the Primer level. He was very quiet, soft spoken and did not seem to have much confidence in his reading.
