1 Journal For each of the following, identify which of the major crimes against property the individual would be charged with, whether it is felony or misdemeanor level, and why: 1. Jason finds a wallet laying in a parking lot. Inside it is $300 in cash, along with the owners drivers’ license and personal business credit cards. Later in the day, Jason is searched by an officer at a traffic stop and is found in possession of the wallet. The bank’s records show that Jason used the card to pay for lunch. 2. Samantha, a grant officer at a major university, has received $3.7 million dollars from donors to put towards scholarships at the end of the academic year. She decides to take the lump sum of money an place it in a savings account until the money is needed. She later takes all the interest earned and withdraws it, later depositing it in her personal account. 3. Mike and Sid break into a house in a local neighborhood at around 1 pm. They take two flat-screen televisions and a backpack full of dvds. 4. Amber purchases a new copy of ProTools digital recording software to work on some demos for her band. Her bandmates ask her for a copy of it, and she refuses to make any burned cd copies. She does, however, have them bring their personal laptops to practice where she installs the program on six different computers. 5. Elizabeth is applying to college, and due to her weak transcript, has her cousin create a recommendation letter which appears to be drafted from the office of a prominent senator. She submits it with her application, and is caught when the admissions office contacts the senator’s office.

2 Assignment: Using any available online resources, locate four current events cases involving property crime. The cases must have occurred within the last 6 months, and must be local to within 50 miles of Cary, NC. At least two of the property crimes must be felony-level. For each article, provide a brief summary of the events which led up to the crime, as well as any information provided on the criminal themselves and (if provided) the value of the property damage/loss incurred. Each article summary must include the full name of the article and a link to article. Based on what we have learned about the nature of criminals and types of crimes, create two basic pamphlets (two or three panel) with the title, “Protecting Yourself Against Property Crime.” One should target the private community, the other should focus on the business community. For ordinary citizens, your should explain and help people defend themselves against major crimes such as Vandalism, Larceny, Burglary, Robbery, and Auto Theft. For the business community, you should address Vandalism, Burglary, Embezzlement, Forgery, and Computer Crime. Your pamphlet should include a full-color cover, and at least one appropriate image to accompany each section of your informational guide. Explanations of crimes should be short paragraphs, but “helpful hints” may be in bullet-point format.
