2 Schema Schmidt criticised the idea of motor programmes:
We cannot hold a memory trace/motor programme for all movements – not enough memory capacity Every movement is unique – every clear is different

3 Schema We have a general set of movement patterns that we can adapt for all situations, schmidt called these patterns schema’s. We have two types of schema: Recall schema – used before the movement Recognition schema – used during the movement

4 Recall Schema First element in producing the correct movement is to recognise the INITIAL CONDITIONS around us. Environment, our body position, our muscle tension etc. Second stage is to recognise what needs to be achieved and how to do that in other words what is the RESPONSE SPECIFICATION Movement objective, limb movements, speed, timing etc.

5 Recognition schema Now the movement starts and the Brain starts to receive feedback, in other words we start to get the SENSORY CONSEQUENCES of our movement When we complete the movement our Brain is able to see the result and compare to the objective of the movement. This stage is the RESPONSE OUTCOME.

6 Perform the movement SCHEMA - OVERVIEW LEARNING TAKES PLACE
What movement will I need to achieve the outcome? What does it feel Like? How close did I get? LEARNING TAKES PLACE Recall Recognition Where am I and what do I need to do? Modify my response for next time Perform the movement

7 Activity For a specific skill in a specific sport, explain how we can modify a general skill to suit the needs of a sporting situation using Schema Theory. In case you forgot the 4 schema are: Initial conditions Response Specification Sensory Consequences Response Outcomes
