9 JIM BATTERSBY WHAT A LEGACY!

10 30 YEARS aGO Jim and Barbara Battersby formed SoTM The aim was to help the project restore much of Tiritiri Matangi to (or near to) its pre human state Really sparked by a shortage of spades and tools! Humble beginnings indeed!

11 30 YEARS ON Planting effectively complete Endangered birds, reptiles and insects introduced (and thriving) Source of species for other projects Source of inspiration

12 30 YEARS ON A “must do” tourist destination
30 to 35 thousand visitors per year Thriving education programme - Inspires future generations of conservationists Historical renovation and development Built and funded a visitor centre, a workshop and vehicle shed Purchased a multitude of vehicles, mechanical and hand tools.

13 30 YEARS ON Generate income to maintain:- Guiding tracks Roads
Buildings Vehicles Weeding programme Bird monitoring Species management Education Etc

14 30 YEARS ON We have around:-
250 volunteers guides 400 volunteers overall 2,000 to 2,500 individual members Represented on national species management groups Hosted royalty, international celebrities, politicians and conservation groups

HIHI – 30 to Rotokare and 10 to Bushy Park TIEKE - 40 flew to Shakespear KOKAKO - 14 to Pirongia TAKAHE - 2 to Burwood (Kahukura and Arataki ) Anatori and Tussie's daughter Waimarie will stay with them this season to help with the next chick/s.

Hihi - Fledged 153 young - slightly better than previous year Kokako – 8 fledglings, same as previous year (2 adults disappeared in late summer/autumn) - current population around 35 birds

Rifleman - 48 pairs found (up from 33 previous year) - recent survey promising for a further increase Tieke - Not able to tell as nest box use low – plenty of fledglings though!

31 Interesting stuff biodiversity
The NZ dotterel that fledged from Hobbs Beach in was seen at Okoromai Bay in March. The return of banded kokopu. Have been seen in the ponds on the Kawerau Track.

We have signed the agreement with DOC for three leases and 1 licence. Leases for the land for the field centre, the museum and the existing implement shed Licence for the construction of the signal mast Resource consent application lodged 3 weeks ago (20 day turnaround guarantee!)

We have identified and met with an organisation which could carry out our capital funding programme. They have presented a funding plan which we are considering.
