Gesture Drawing and Pastels
Project 5
2
Warm Up Don’t forget! We will have a notes check on Friday!
Review your notes: Portfolio Collage, One Point Perspective, Two Point Perspective, What Masks Reveal, and Underlying Shapes. All of your notes must be in one bound notebook or sketchbook!
3
Today’s Assignment Today, we will continue practicing gesture drawing.
Our goal is to quickly and accurately lay out the proportions and placement of a figure. This is practice for our big project this week: A pastel drawing of a person in action!

And now… Practicing with a photograph and with a live model can be very different. For the next few drawings, we’ll need a few volunteers. We will complete a series of timed sketches for a posed classmate! You may continue drawing with the charcoal, or you may use your pencil.
10
One Minute Poses Imagine you are a softball or baseball player.
Imagine you are very tired. Imagine you are pointing at a friend who actually slipped on a banana peel. Imagine you are cheering on your favorite team when the score is tied and they are in double overtime!
11
Wrap Up Everyone: Tomorrow we will begin planning our pastel drawings. You may bring in a photo or a magazine clipping of a person in action. If you don’t have one on hand, you may choose one from the magazines in class. Supplies: Take up the charcoal and hand them to me. Everyone: I will dismiss one table at a time to wash up and put away work.
12
Day 2: Warm Up In your notebooks, write “Gesture Drawing and Pastels” at the top of the page. Divide your page into three sections:
13
Warm Up Continued… On the bottom half of your notes, write the following words: 1. Thumbnail— 2. Composition— 3. Proportion– Watch the video and define the terms in your own words:
14
Today’s Assignment Today, you will begin planning your pastel.
If you don’t have a reference photo, choose one from the classroom magazines. In your sketchbook, fill a page with sketches of your figure in action. Focus on perfecting the proportions. Color with crayons or colored pencils to plan your colors. While working, you will also continue turning in work via Google Classroom!
15
Wrap Up Tomorrow, we will begin using pastels.
Bring aprons or large shirts if you can! This may sound strange, but old cotton socks or fingerless gloves can be used to protect your drawing and your hands as well!
16
Warm Up: Day 3 In the upper left column of your notes, write “Mary Cassatt ( ).” Artist during the __________ centuries. She belonged to a group of painters who loved bold, loose colors-- _______________________. Her work often featured scenes of:
17
Maternal Kiss
18
Woman in a Loge
19
Portrait of Master St. Pierre
20
Today’s Assignment Today, you will continue planning your figure drawing. Use thumbnails to decide on the layout, practice the proportions, and choose your medium. When you have a plan, begin using pastels. Lightly sketching your design with a pencil or piece of charcoal is a good idea!

Pastel Information!
22
Some Guidelines: You must have a plan before you start using pastels.
The background can be abstract, like Cassatt’s pastels. Your figure may be out of focus or silhouetted if you prefer. Soft pastels: Draw your background first, then your figure on top of that. Oil pastels: Draw your figure first, then your background around it.

Warm Up: Day 4 For today’s warm up, you will quietly work on the notebook check handout. You may use your notes. Please keep your eyes on your own papers and notes. When you have answered 1-4, raise your hand and I will take your paper. It will take minutes, and everyone must work quietly!
26
Today’s Assignment Today, we will continue our pastel drawings.
As you work, please check your Google Classroom page to be sure all work is turned in. If you cannot post an assignment, leave a comment for me explaining why (e.g. “I wasn’t here for that” or “I lost it because…). Next Friday is the deadline for posting work!
