1 AIM: What are Metamorphic Rocks
Do Now: Take out your ESRT and turn to page 7. Look at the chart called Scheme for Metamorphic Rock identification and answer the questions below. What textures of Metamorphic rocks will we be working with? What types of metamorphism are there?

2

3 Formation of Metamorphic Rocks
Metamorphism = “to change form” created from other rocks (parent rocks) high temperatures and pressures inside Earth cause rocks to change. Schist Slate Gneiss

4 *This symbol indicates contact metamorphism took place
small areas where hot magma touches the rock, results in low grade metamorphism. B. Regional Metamorphism – Large areas, usually under mountains, results in high grade metamorphism and very dense rocks. *This symbol indicates contact metamorphism took place

5 II. Agents of Metamorphism
A. Heat (magma or lava)- allows the minerals to move around and recrystallize. B. Pressure (Stress) – squeezes the rock changing the density and alignment(pattern). How would the density change after metamorphism?

6 III. Classification of Metamorphic Rocks
Foliated Metamorphic Rocks (pattern) - minerals have aligned and either mineral alignment or banding. Slate Gneiss

7 B. Nonfoliated Metamorphic Rocks – - does not show a pattern.
- has a frosted appearance Quartzite Marble

8 The type of metamorphism section tells you how the rock was created
The comments section gives a accurate description of the rock and it’s parent rock The type of metamorphism section tells you how the rock was created

9 Lets look at the texture of Metamorphic rocks
