Begin with the Body Select the topic/main idea
Brainstorm/List key points Arrange them in order Expand those points Create examples/ anecdotes

Develop an Outline Main Idea Chronological Spatial Causal Comparative Topical Problem-Solution Identify which of these outline techniques best explains your speech Fit your content according to one of these outlines Write out the script of the body Outlines aid memory n a written piece (like this article), headings, bullets, and punctuation provide cues to the reader that help them understand the macro-organization. In a verbal speech, use pauses and transition phrases to achieve this effect so that the audience knows when one point ends, and the next begins.

Use Appropriate Transitions
Lead the audience smoothly from one topic to another Identify which transition phrases/words you are comfortable with and appropriate for the outline First….second…, Consequently, more importantly, ‘After spending 3 years in….’ ‘Now that we have looked at… let’s …’ One of the effects of smoking….another effect ‘While Sam loved music, Jeremy loved dancing..’

Develop the Closing Natural progression from the Body to the Closing – completes your message Type of Closing – depends on your speech purpose (P3) To Inform : Summarize key points To humor : End with a climactic laughter To persuade : Call for action To inspire :Change audience feelings….leave them on a ‘HIGH’

Develop the Opening Lead the audience into the topic (but don’t give it away) Make a strong start (Memorize thoroughly) Type of Opening – depends on your speech purpose!! To inform : state some startling facts To humor : get the audience to laugh in the first 30 seconds To persuade : make the audience aware of the problem To inspire : introduce a philosophy/beliefs

Practice Practice the speech leaving the script for reference
Identify points in the speech which create problems Rewrite/eliminate those sections Drop the paper altogether and PRACTICE Do not MEMORIZE WORD for WORD!!
