SI Fig. 5 Axial oblique MPRs of the right hip from two different individuals. (a) There is a ‘herniation pit’ in the subcortical bone of anterior femoral head–neck junction (black arrow) with a reaction phenomenon in cortical bone just lateral to this (white arrow). (b) A cyst in the subcortical bone at the posterior femoral head-neck junction (white arrowhead) was noted as a rarer phenomenon than the anterior equivalent. Both these lesions in (a) and (b) lie beneath the articular margin. Whether they are they caused by the same process at different locations and whether there is a link between these cysts and osteoarthritis are unknown.
