6 LAW OF CONSERVATION OF MATTER
Matter can neither be created nor destroyed in a chemical reaction. In a chemical reaction, there are the same numbers and types of atoms before and after the reaction.

7 LAW OF CONSERVATION OF MATTER
EX: Formation of Water The chemical reaction is written in an equation that looks like this: 2 𝐻 2 + 𝑂 2  2 𝐻 2 O The items on the left side of the arrow are called reactants and the items on the right side of the arrow are called products.

8 CHEMICAL COMPOUNDS Check the numbers and types of atoms on each side of the arrow. Reactants Product 2 Hydrogen molecules Two molecules of water (each molecule has two (each molecule has two Hydrogen) = total of 4 hydrogen and one oxygen) + for a total of 4 hydrogen and One oxygen molecule 2 oxygen (each molecule has two Oxygen) = total of 2

9 Let’s Practice Counting Atoms
NaOH Na O-1 H-1 Na 𝐢 2 𝐻 3 𝑂 2 Na-1 C-2 H-3 O-2 4 HN 𝑂 3 H – 4 N – 4 O - 12 3 𝐴𝑙 2 𝑂 3 Al – 6 O - 9

10 CHECK IT OUT!! Identify the numbers and types of atoms below:
CaCO3  CaO + CO2 One calcium, one carbon, and three oxygen atoms on each side

11 Mass of Reactants = Mass of Products
