Mandate Decision 9/CP3: continue work on the synthesis and dissemination of information, technologies and know-how conducive to adapting to climate change; … accelerate the development of methodologies for adaptation Speaking about the objectives of our work here I think will be useful to recall the initial mandate for the work of the secretariat. The third Conference of Parties requested the secretariat >to continue its work on the synthesis and dissemination of information on environmentally sound technologies and know‑how conducive [condju:sive] to mitigating, and adapting to, climate change; for example by accelerating the development of methodologies for adaptation technologies, in particular decision tools to evaluate alternative adaptation strategies’

4 Objectives of the work enhance dissemination of methods and improve quality of info about them; promote improving the quality of methodologies; encourage and assist Parties in applying the best available methods The objectives of the work therefore are to promote improving the quality of methodologies; enhance dissemination of methods and quality of info about them; encourage and assist Parties in applying the best available methods in their V&A assessment

5 Objectives of the workshop
SBSTA13: to organise a workshop to explore The experience in applying current impact and adaptation methodologies and emerging needs; The current state of the art of methodologies as identified in the IPCC Third Assessment Report, and how these apply to the specific circumstances of developing countries; Options for improving the quality and dissemination of information on impact and adaptation methodologies. The secretariat has undertaking various activities in the response to the above mandate, which led to the request from SBSTA 13 last yar to organise current workshop = To exchange experience in applying current impacts and adaptation methodologies; To explore the current state of the art on methodologies as identified in the TAR and how these apply to the needs for assessments And to formulate the options for improving the quality and dissemination of info on methods, including possible role of the UNFCCC secretariat

6 UNFCCC Session I and Session II
Focus Major TAR findings re- I&V&A methods, and their relevance to emerging needs for the assessment How we proceed Presentations: 15 min + 10 min questions Roundtable presentations: 5 -7 min Discussion: min around questions for discussion and more (emergent) questions Summary by moderators: min The first two session today are addressed two first objectives. The focus of these sessions is “Major TAR findings re- I&V&A methods, and their relevance to emerging needs for V&A assessment “ How we proceed? These sessions will follow a classical workshop route. The presentation should not exceed 15 min, questions. We also have so called “Roundtable”, which are short presentations of no more than 5-7 min where participants will speak about the experience in applying particular methods/approach. Every session will include discussion, which will be facilitated and stimulated by the moderators, and will end up with the summary by moderators of both sessions.

7 UNFCCC Session III Focus Options to improve methods/models.
Options to improve dissemination of information about methods How we proceed Introductory presentations: 15 min + 10 min questions Plenary discussion&questions: min Discussion in break-out groups: 2 h 30 min Report from break-out groups to plenary:30 min Summary by the moderators: 15 min Focus of UNFCCC session III on Wednesday, on improving methods is two fold: First, addresses the questions “How methods/models could be improved”. Second addresses the issues of improvement of the dissemination of methods and information about them The discussion paper entitled “How can impacts models, information about them, and their use be improved?” which has been made available before the workshop and is in your folder, provides some introduction to the discussion. Respectively, we will have two introductory presentations at the plenary presentation, and initial set-up discussion at a plenary session. Then we propose to break-up onto the groups and continue the discussion and formulating the recommendations, which will report back to plenary. The moderators for this session will summarise the main options/issues from this discussion.

8 UNFCCC WORKSHOP ON METHODOLOGIES ON CLIMATE CHANGE IMPACT AND ADAPTATION back-to-back with UNDP-GEF WORKSHOP FOR DEVELOPING AN ADAPTATION POLICY FRAMEWORK Welcome, opening and introduction: UNFCCC&UNDP-GEF UNFCCC session I & II UNDP session I UNFCCC session III So, I told you about the UNFCCC sessions UNDP session II Conclusions and recommendations: A&B

9 Conclusions and Recommendations:
Focus What IPCC TAR findings are most important for and relevant to emerging needs for V&A assessment? What are the options to improve methodologies? What are the options to improve dissemination and quality of information on I&A methods? How we proceed Presentation of the conclusions by the chair: min Discussion by elements (not line by line) Closing Concluding session. Alleluia. The focus of this session is, naturally, to formulate and accept conclusions and the three days work and recommendations. The job of our distinguish chairman will be to put together and present conclusions for discussion/approval to plenary. We expect the conclusions to focus on: What IPCC TAR findings are most important for and relevant to emerging needs for V&A assessment? What are the options to improve methodologies taking into consideration the TAR findings and current experience in V&A assessment? What options could be recommended to improve dissemination of information on I&A methods, noting the effort of the UNFCCC secretariat and taking into consideration the TAR? Let me to finish here. I hope it was useful. And I sure that given the brilliant representation we have at the meeting the workshop will be very productive.

10 Success depends on you So, it remains only to wish a Good luck with our work! Thank you.
