Warm-Up 9/14/16 In your notebook, answer the following prompt in 4-5 complete sentences. Imagine: You live in a town with certain rules but no one enforces those rules. You can live however you want to live as long as you are not causing any problems in the town. All of a sudden alliances ( pact/friendship) change and your mother country (Spain) sends in an inspector that tells you how you need to live. How would you feel about these changes? What would you do as a citizen of Spain?

A Call to Independence • Life under Spanish rule was difficult for many of the colonists in New Spain. • Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla’s call for an uprising was the beginning of the Mexican War of Independence. Father Hidalgo gave a speech called The Cry of Dolores, he was eventually captured and executed for Treason. Hidalgo inspired others like Morelos and de Lara to stand up and fight against Spain

The Republican Army captured Goliad in November 1812 Then they forced the Spanish to surrender San Antonio in early 1813.

Battle of Medina • In August 1813, the Spanish defeated the Republican Army, killing most of the rebels and causing others to flee. The Spanish also tracked down and killed colonists in San Antonio who had helped the Republican Army. Some made their way back to the United States, and others went to Galveston Island. The Spanish army was so brutal that Texas remained Spanish for another seven years.

Language Target: I will explain why the Spanish influence from the early 1800’s is important to our society today.

Independence • Mexicans of Spanish descent, or criollos, joined in the struggle for independence. • Agustín de Iturbide offered three guarantees for Mexico: (1) Mexico would be independent from Spain (2) All Mexican people would be equal (3) Mexico would remain a Roman Catholic country. • On August 24, 1821, the signing of the Treaty of Cordoba ended Spanish rule in Mexico.

Spain’s Legacy • Spain claimed Texas for 300 years, and Spanish influence can be seen in our culture, language, traditions, and people. • Although Spanish settlers did not live everywhere in Texas, they explored and traveled throughout the region. Many rivers and natural landmarks were named by the Spanish conquistadores who mapped them. • Many Texas communities and early roads also commemorate our Spanish history.
