Plant Structure

Plant Structure The raw materials of photosynthesis enter the plant through different structures. Sunlight is absorbed by the chlorophyll in the chloroplasts within the leaves.

Plant Structure Carbon dioxide enters the leaves through the
Stomates (stomata) which are controlled by guard cells. Water can be lost by transpiration through the stomata. The cuticle ( waxy outer covering) minimizes water loss.

Water and minerals enter the plant through the xylem.
Plant Structure Water and minerals enter the plant through the xylem. The products of photosynthesis are transported throughout the plant by the phloem.

Chloroplasts Photosynthesis takes place inside organelles called chloroplasts.

Chloroplasts Chloroplasts contain saclike photosynthetic membranes called thylakoids, which are interconnected and arranged in stacks known as grana.

Chloroplasts Pigments are located in the thylakoid membranes.

Chloroplasts The fluid portion outside of the thylakoids is known as the stroma.
