2 Objectives What were the motivations of the French in colonizing the New World? What were the motivations of Spain in colonizing the New World? What were the motivations of the Dutch in colonizing the New World?

3 England and North America
Sir Humphrey Gilbert and Sir Walter Raleigh are wealthy English men. They are given charters to establish colonies in the New World. These early colonies fail because they lack planning and financial support. Why would planning and financial support be so important?

4 Spreading Protestantism
England is a Protestant nation England wants to liberate the world from the Catholic Church and the Pope Enemy #1: Spain (a Catholic nation) If these nations are competing with one another, how are they carrying out that competition?

5 English motivations for colonization
National Power and Wealth (competition with other nations) High population growth in England Religious freedom Poor economic conditions in England  families seek better life Land = Basis of liberty, wealth, and power Many English people come over as indentured servants If English settlers are coming over in groups or part of families, how is that different from French and Spanish colonization?

6 Advertise for your colony
There were several reasons why English people chose to come to the New World. Using those reasons, create an advertisement poster to try and convince people to come to the New World. Push Factors Picture and Story Pull Factors

7 Going to the new world - Tell me a Story Time
Imagine that you are living in England in the 1500’s and you decide that you want to travel to the New World. Things to Consider: What are the reasons pushing you away from England? What are the reasons pulling you to the New World? How will your life be different in the New World? What are you feeling? Fear? Excitement?

8 Indentured Servants vs. Slaves
2/3 of English settlers Could become free members of society Mostly white Slaves West African slaves reach Jamestown in 1619 Could NOT become free members of society Mostly African How is the concept of “freedom” different for these two groups of people?

Why?

10 Salutary Neglect England’s rival was France  their 1st priority was to compete with France Colonies were 2nd priority England generally avoided strict enforcement of laws to keep colonies happy so they can continue to get raw materials
