4 RECONCILIATION A Sacrament of Healing

5 Catechism of the Catholic Church
1446: Christ instituted the sacrament of Penance for all sinful members of his Church: above all for those who, since Baptism, have fallen into grave sin, and have thus lost their baptismal grace and wounded ecclesial communion. It is to them that the sacrament of Penance offers a new possibility to convert and to recover the grace of justification. The Fathers of the Church present this sacrament as “the second plank [of salvation] after the shipwreck which is the loss of grace.”

6 Evolution of this sacrament
Public Confessions were the norm “Confess your sins to one another…” James 5: 16 Rigorous Penance Took years Public penance Private Confession 7th Century Allowed for frequent reception

7 When do we confess? ASAP Once a year minimum When prompted
Especially in the case of Mortal Sin Once a year minimum However there is no limit When prompted Holy Spirit Conscience

8 What is required of us? 1450: Penance requires … the sinner to endure all things willingly, be contrite of heart, confess with the lips, and practice complete humility and fruitful satisfaction.” 1451: Among the penitent’s acts contrition occupies first place. Contrition is “sorrow of the soul and detestation for the sin committed, together with the resolution not to sin again.

9 What is required of us? (cont.)
Perfect Contrition Arises from Love of God and sadness of offending him Requires a firm resolution to sin no more When possible to seek sacramental absolution Imperfect Contrition Fear of punishment Ugliness of sin Is not sufficient to forgive grave sin with our sacramental absolution

10 Making a Good Confession
