3 Trouble in the Colonies
French and Indian War = Taxes New Laws/Taxes Sugar Act (1764) Currency Act (1764) Stamp Act (1765) Quartering Act (1765) Coercive Acts/Intolerable Acts Video

4 1st Continental Congress September 5 1774
After Parliament passed the Intolerable acts All Colonies (except Georgia) sent delegates They discussed and debated Sent the Declaration of Rights to King George III Called for a boycott in trade with England Not really talking about breaking away (YET)

5 2nd Continental Congress May 10 1775
Revolution had already begun in Lexington and Concord All 13 Colonies showed up this time John Hancock was chosen president on the meeting George Washington was chosen Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army Nations First Government But without a constitution Served as both Legislative and Executive They were traitors to Britain

6 Declaration of Independence
Committee of 5 were asked by the 2nd Continental Congress to prepare a proclamation of Independence But the Declaration of Independence was almost all Thomas Jefferson Many delegates were worried about calling for 100% breaking away from Britain Why do you think they were so torn between breaking away and not? video

7 Starting to develop a new government
1st states had to replace royal charters with constitutions Common features of these state constitutions Popular Sovereignty Most common Government can exist only with the consent of the governed Limited Government Civil Rights and Liberties Separation of Powers
