1 Preparing for Local TV Station Changes

2 What is Happening? Many local TV stations must change frequencies – the airwaves they use to broadcast their programming. TV stations will be making changes at different times starting in the fall of 2018 through at least the spring of 2020. If you watch TV for free, over the air using an antenna, you will need to rescan your TV set to keep your local signals. Rescanning is when your TV finds all of the available channels in your area.

3 Why is this Happening? The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) held an auction to reallocate broadcast airwaves to make more room for wireless internet broadband services. As a result, nearly 1,000 TV stations are required to move to new frequencies to make room for wireless internet services.

4 How Does this Impact Me? If you watch TV over the air with an antenna, you will need to rescan your TV sets when your local stations move to new frequencies. This will ensure you can continue watching TV for free and receive the critical emergency updates, news and entertainment your local stations deliver. You likely do not need to purchase any new equipment or services.  Because TV stations are moving at different times, you may need to rescan your TV more than once. If you haven’t rescanned your TV recently, you may discover TV channels you didn’t know you were missing. If your TV is connected to cable or satellite service, you don’t need to do anything.

5 What Do I Need to Do? Plan to Rescan
Stay tuned to your local TV stations for information about when they plan to move frequencies. Rescan your TV set on the date and time the station tells you to keep watching your local TV stations for free.

6 Plan to Rescan Rescanning your TV set is relatively simple:
Select "scan" or "autotune" from your TV or converter box control menu to start the scanning process. You can usually find instructions by pressing the "set-up" or "menu" buttons on your television or digital antenna remote control.

7 You can find out when stations in your hometown will be moving channels and instructions on how to rescan at TVAnswers.org. on social for updates.
