1 EXISTENTIALISM REVIEW
It is a philosophical movement that emphasized individual existence, freedom and choice with an emphasis on alienation and isolation. Human existence occurs within a hostile indifferent world with society indifferent to the individual condition. Individuals can’t really control their own destiny. They perform daily burdens throughout the course of their lives, often oblivious to their own unpleasant predicament that can’t be changed.

2 Remember it is symbolized by two dominant images:
Myth of Sisyphus representing the absurd." there is a fundamental conflict between what we want from the universe (whether it be meaning, order, or reasons) and what we find in the universe (formless chaos). Prometheus Bound - life is a journey between hope and despair. Sometimes in life it is hard to choose what is the obvious reality in a world made up of so many myths and dreams. Sometimes it is better to accept the ugly, unpleasant truth of man's place in the animal kingdom. Sometimes it is better to take that which we can not stand to make us better understand.

3 Soren Kierkegaard was the first to call himself and existential and he insisted the highest good for the individual is to find his/her own unique vocation. Then 19th century philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche further contended that the individual must decide on the morality of individual situations. Existentialists in general have held that human beings do not have a fixed nature as other animals do; each human makes choices that create his/her own unique nature. They also stresses that personal experience and acting on one’s own convictions are essential in arriving at the truth.

4 The analysis to which Existentialism has subjected the human person reveals one undeniable fact: the weakness of man, who is burdened by the most galling contradictions. “In the speculative sphere there is the desire to possess absolute knowledge -- but it is rendered vain by the constant presence of skeptical doubt; in the field of morality there is the desire for infinite happiness -- but it is rendered uncertain by the constant presence of evil; there is the desire for everlasting life -- but it is dashed to the depths by the ubiquitous presence of death.” Existentialism is essentially the analysis of the condition of man, of the particular state of being free, and of man's having constantly to use his freedom in order to answer the ever-changing and unexpected challenges of the day.
