2. Rainbow Trout
(Oncorhynchus mykiss)
Iridescent, reddish streak running from gill to caudal
fin.
Dark spots on their backs, heads, bellies and all fins.
Length: inches.
Recent studies have shown that rainbow trout DNA are closer in comparison to Pacific Salmon than to brown trout.

3. Lake Trout
(Salvelinus namaycush)
From the Ojibwe name namegos meaning ‘lake trout’.
Other names include mackinaw, lake char, touladi, togue, and grey trout.
Largest of the trouts.
Extirpated due to invasive species (lampreys), over-harvesting, and pollution.

4. Splake
(Salvelinus namaycush X Salvelinus fontinalis)
Crossing of male brook trout and female lake trout
‘SP’eckled trout (another name for brook trout) and ‘LAKE’ trout.
Length: 10 to 18 inches
Rare reproduction outside of a hatchery environment.
Easy to catch.
Live long.

5. Pacific Salmon
(Oncorhynchus Salmonidae)
Genus name refers to the hooked snout.
7 types of Pacific Salmon.
Pink, Coho, and Chinook salmon have all been introduced the Great Lakes.
Taking away the habitat of the already endangered Atlantic Salmon in the area.

6. Muskie (Muskellunge)
(Esox Masquinongy)
Largest member of pike family.
Uncommon freshwater fish.
Elongated body, with a flat head, and dorsal fins set far back on the body.
Light silver, brown, and green with dark vertical stripes, breaking up into spots.
Muskie’s prey on pretty much anything that can fit in it’s mouth.

7. Channel Catfish
(Siluriformes)
More than ½ the world’s Catfish live in Americas.
Catfish are vocal animals when they are captured or prodded.
Most catfish in the region are adapted for a benthic lifestyle (they sink).

8. Walleye (Sander vitreus vitreus)
It is NOT a walleye pike, yellow pike, or pickerel.
The name Walleye itself comes from the fact that the fishes eyes (like cats) reflect light.
Length: 75 cm (30 in)
Weight: 7 kg (15 lb)
Walleyes are olive and gold in colour.
Maximum recorded age was 29 years.

9. Smallmouth Bass
(Micropterus dolomieui)
In the sunfish family.
Green with dark vertical bands along it’s body.
Intolerant to pollution; a good natural indicator of a healthy environment.
They enjoy clear, rocky habitats with little vegetation.
Length: 25-50cm (10-20 in)
It may take 15 years for a Smallmouth Bass to reach 5 lb.

10. Yellow Perch
(Perca flavescens)
Perch have a rough (ctenoid) scales.
First fin on their back is spiny and the second one is smooth.
Yellow in colour with six to eight dark vertical bars on their sides.
Length: cm (4-10 in)
Weight: 150 g (5.29 oz)

11. Sturgeon
(Acipenser flavescent)
Appears in fossil records that date back 200 million years ago.
Length: 7-12 feet (2-3½ meters) in length.
Sturgeons are slow-growing and mature very late in life.
Extremely vulnerable to exploitation and to other threats including pollution, and habitat fragmentation.
Endangered or at least under special consideration (vulnerable).
