First, Germany would send in their air force to bomb and inflict as much damage as possible. Secondly, they would follow that up with a land invasion to destroy the remaining people and buildings.

In the beginning of the war, we were attempting to avoid civilian targets because we considered it “uncivilized” to kill civilians in war. By the end of the war, we were reverting to the very strategies we had previously described as being uncivilized by purposely hitting civilian targets.
