2. Greece was not just one country, instead it consisted of many _______.
From about 490 to 479 BC these Greek _________ fought against the powerful Persian Empire. 

3. Most of what we know about the Persian Wars comes from the Greek historian Herodotus

Under Cyrus the Great, who began to lead them in 559 BC, they built a large empire, it included the Greek cities in Asia Minor, known to the Greeks as Ionia.

6. Cyrus took his nomadic warriors and conquered most of Mesopotamia 
His son Darius continued this-expanded empire to the East(Indus Valley), west to Egypt, North
Best place to live?...Maybe not if you are from Greece.  - Greeks lived in City-States, and considered themselves citizens of that city-state...Until the Persian Wars -

Cyrus the Greats son, Darius, continued to expand the Persian Empire. 
The Persian's ruled with a light touch,
Conquered kingdoms could keep their kings as long as they paid their taxes 
Freedom of religion (Zoroastrian)

Greece was starting to get crowded. Some Greek People decided to look for new homes in different, nearby locations. 
The Greek people had begun settling into colonies on the west coast of the Persian Empire.

Persians decided to conquer these colonies
In 499 B.C. Greeks in these colonies revolted against Persian rule 

11. A group of people from an area called Ionia have been conquered by the Persian Empire. These people are now being taxed and must serve in the Persian Army. They are asking you for help to free them

14. Greek Revolt Greek colony in Ionia rebels against Persian rule
Athens agrees to help defend the Greek city-state against the Persians
Athens eventually withdraws from battle
Persian army defeats the Greek city-state
Emperor Darius the Great is upset with Athens for helping 

15. Battle of Marathon Darius leads an attack against the Greek mainland
The Athenians met the Persian's on the beach, led by military genius Miltiades 
The Athens army was outnumbered but they were able to defeat the Persians.
