Particles are helped across the cell membrane by hydrophilic proteins embedded in it
Ions like Cl- and Na+ cross through a channel
Large polar molecules (like glucose) can be bound by a protein
Polar bond: covalent bond between two atoms where electrons are shared unequally
Because of this, one end of the molecule is slightly positive and the other is slightly negative in charge

Move from an area of high concentration to low concentration
Does not require energy from the cell
Used for molecules that are too big to pass directly through the cell membrane or protein channel
