1 5GHz WLAN Globalization
May 2001 doc.: IEEE /283 May 2001 5GHz WLAN Globalization Where it started Why it was started Are we still on track? What is wrong with this approach? What we should be doing Richard Kennedy, Compaq Computer Corporation Richard Kennedy, Compaq Computer Corporation

2 May 2001 Where it Started This effort began with the 5WLIAG in attempt to simplify wireless networking in the 5GHz bands Are we still aligned with that group? TGj will create another standard (amendment) 5WLIAG wants to reduce the number of standards Richard Kennedy, Compaq Computer Corporation

3 Why it was Started IEEE802.11a and HiperLAN2 will not interoperate
May 2001 doc.: IEEE /283 May 2001 Why it was Started IEEE802.11a and HiperLAN2 will not interoperate Creates uncertainty for users Which card? What environment? An attempt to avoid the 2.4GHz problems IEEE /802.11b/HomeRF/IEEE g/ Proprietary Richard Kennedy, Compaq Computer Corporation Richard Kennedy, Compaq Computer Corporation

4 Single Global Standard
May 2001 Are We Still On Track? The original plan HiperLAN2 IEEE a Single Global Standard Transition Period Richard Kennedy, Compaq Computer Corporation

5 Single Global Standard(?)
May 2001 Are We Still On Track? Potential result of current direction HiperLAN2a Transition Period HiperLAN2 HiperLAN2 Single Global Standard(?) IEEE a IEEE a IEEE h IEEE e IEEE i IEEE j Richard Kennedy, Compaq Computer Corporation

6 What is Wrong With This Approach?
May 2001 What is Wrong With This Approach? Market confusion Which one do I need? Will it interoperate with what I already have? Certification nightmare Marketing and Manufacturing logistics nightmares Richard Kennedy, Compaq Computer Corporation

7 What Should We Be Doing? Simplify, simplify, simplify.
May 2001 What Should We Be Doing? Simplify, simplify, simplify. Develop a set of interworking recommended practices Focus on the partnership project to get to a single standard in the shortest possible time Watch the market flourish! Richard Kennedy, Compaq Computer Corporation

8 May 2001 doc.: IEEE /283 May 2001 Motion The IEEE P GSG will produce as its final output, a set of recommended practices designed to enable HiperLAN2 to achieve a degree of interworking with IEEE a, and a recommendation to ETSI-BRAN to do the same for IEEE a interworking with HiperLAN2. Recommended practices is defined as rules to be applied when and if compatibility is desired, but are not required The required degree of interworking is to be determined by the 5GSG.
