Octane number : Is a measure of a gasoline’s resistance to knock in a cylinder of a pertol engine.
The higher the octane number, the higher the resistance to knock, the higher is the efficiency of the fuel to produce work. There is a relationship between octane number and the compression ratio of the engine. The higher the octane number, the higher the compression ratio that can be used. The octane number of gasoline is that percentage of isooctane in a blend of isooctane and normal heptane which exactly matches the knocking behaviors of the gasoline. Thus a 90-octane gasoline matches the knock characteristic of a blend containing 90% (v/v) isooctane and 10 % normal heptane.
