1 Class Activity #1: Table Talk
1. What should the main purpose of law be? To promote good behavior or punish bad behavior? 2. Why do Societies develop laws? 3. Do all societies need a system of law to guide them?

2 Class Activity Directions: Working in groups, students will answer questions 1-3. Expectation: Each group member will contribute to the answering of the question. Students will apply information about the changes that took place as civilizations developed Evaluation: Ms. Willis will randomly call on students

3 Class Activity #2: Mock Trial
Should your cousin be punished for stealing one of the pigs to feed his family? Directions: Each table will write a defense of Mummar or sentence of death Expectation: All students will participate in the writing activity Evaluation: Each table will nominate one person to speak. Page 33

4 Debriefing Questions Discuss with your team & write down your answers to the following questions: How did Hammurabi’s Code advance civilization? Why is the development of written code of laws important to society?

5 Neolithic Revolution Some hunters & gatherers were advanced, but were never able to develop complex societies because they had to migrate to find food Early humans were nomadic hunters & gatherers & had to move around to find their food

6 Neolithic Revolution Farming changed the way humans lived:
Around 8,000 B.C., the Neolithic Revolution occurred & early humans discovered how to farm & domesticate animals People no longer had to be nomads Food surpluses led to population increases Farming villages became established along river valleys for their good soil & irrigation

11 Civilizations must have technologies that make their lives easier

12 Civilizations must have writing in order to keep records of taxes, laws, or trade

13 Civilizations must have specialized workers that create a class system

14 Civilizations must have complex institutions like government & religion to keep order

15 Closure Activity Now that we have defined “civilization”:
Is the United States a civilization? Give evidence to support your answer.
