Based on the background information you’ve been given (notes), as well as the essay “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” by Jonathan Edwards (p.87 in textbook), you should have a fairly good picture of what Puritan society was like.
YOUR ASSIGNMENT IS TO:
1. Come up with three characteristics (adjectives) that you believe define Puritanism
2. Find an especially vivid / intense passage from Edwards that you believe illustrates those characteristics (write it out completely)
3. Literally illustrate your passage from “Sinners” (draw a picture)
4. Defend in writing how your passage fits the key characteristics you've chosen - one complete paragraph.
Put your drawing (step 3) on one side of a 8 ½ x 11 piece of printer paper. On the reverse side, write out steps 1, 2 and 4.

Passage: “That world of misery, that lake of burning brimstone, is extended abroad under you. There is the dreadful pit of the glowing flames of the wrath of God; there is hell’s wide gaping mouth open; and you have nothing to stand upon, nor anything between you and hell but the air; it is only the power and mere pleasure of God that holds you up” (87).
