1 The change over time in a population is Evolution
The change over time in a population is Evolution Natural Selection is the change in heritable traits of a population over time.

2 Charles Darwin Darwin’s Observations:
Patterns of Diversity- Animals suited to the environment they inhabited. Living Organisms and Fossils- Why did they disappear, how were they related to living species. The Galapagos Islands- Most important part of Charles Darwin's travels. WHY?

3 Natural Selection Conditions of Natural Selection: 1. Variation: This means there are differences between the individuals in a population. 2. Inheritance: The variations that exist within the population must be inheritable from parents to offspring.

4 Natural Selection 3. Overproduction: As a result of reading a famous essay of his time — Essay on the Principle of Population by Malthus — Darwin realized that in natural populations more offspring are born than can possibly live to reproduce. 4. Differential Survival and Reproduction: Given the three conditions described, certain individuals will survive and reproduce more often than others, and these individuals and their offspring (the ones with the successful traits) will therefore become more common over time. This, in a nutshell, is evolution by natural selection.

5 Evidence of Natural Selection
Math?

6 LAB Paper represents the environment
Dots represent different colors of butterflies Group: One recorder, One rule keeper, Two predators. Predators will take turns eating a butterfly (dots) Fill out the lab handout as a group. (put all your names on it) Turn the handout in to your class box.

7 Conclusion Selective Breeding: Example the sheep at the farm.
Natural Selection: Darwin’s Finches. Compare and Contrast
