‘We Shall Overcome’ was easy to sing and had a majestic melody that endowed the verses with nobility. Sung slowly with swelling harmonies, it beautifully exemplified the idealism and optimism of the Civil Rights Movement…Freedom songs melded naturally with the tradition of church singing. They encouraged the active participation of ordinary people, and made the audience, rather than the speakers, the center of attention. They made the mass meetings in Albany some of the most enthusiastic and inspirational occasions of the entire Civil Rights Movement. What can we learn from this source about the importance of singing in the Civil Rights Movement? How valuable is this source to a historian?
