1 How do things appear the deeper you go?
Light in the Ocean How do things appear the deeper you go?

2 Optical Oceanography The study of light in the sea

3 Question When you look at a blue piece of fabric, why do you see that particular color? Blue is reflected All of the other wavelengths of light are absorbed.

4 FYI White is a combination of all colors, so when we see white, the object is reflecting all the colors of light the same. Black is the opposite. When we see a black object that means almost all the colors of light are being absorbed.

5 How Does This Apply to the Ocean?
Water is very good at absorbing all wavelengths of light except blue Question: Why does the ocean sometimes appear turquoise or even green? Plankton and sediment

6 Visible Light Spectrum
ROY G BIV *Longer wavelengths are absorbed faster than shorter wavelengths!

7 Visible Light in the Ocean

8 Demonstration
