1 Eastern Bird Banding Association Annual Meeting, April 9-11, 2010
Eastern Bird Banding Association Annual Meeting, April 9-11, Rocky Gap State Park, Flintstone, Maryland

2 Banding returns from backyard Dark-eyed Juncos to nesting Canada Geese by the mall Dr. David Thorndill, Professor of Biology Community College of Baltimore County  webpage:

3 Canada Geese 2008-2010 Individual observations

4 A study of banded Canada Geese
June 28, 2007 , Larry Hindman of the MD Wildlife Division-DNR banded Canada Geese in Preston, Caroline County, MD. In May 2008 many of these geese were seen near White Marsh Mall in Baltimore County, MD, about fifty miles northwest of Preston. Geese are lured close with bread and band numbers are read directly.

6 A study of banded Canada Geese
Thirty-seven geese with band number prefixes have been see in the White Marsh area between May 2008 and Only the last three band digits are used here is listed as # 094, seen here.

7 One goose, called Domino, was not banded but is easily recognizes by a wing deformity. Domino is unable to fly and has often been the only goose in the pond, especially in the winter. Other geese may be seen at any of three ponds about a quarter mile apart or on grassy lawns.

20 Field study to estimate species population size Capture-Release-Capture Method
Best Conditions: a closed population Large population Birds mix freely No animals born No animals die No migration into or from out of the study area All animals have an equal chance of being captured and recaptured

21 Field study to estimate species population size. 1
Field study to estimate species population size 1. Band birds under best conditions 2. Recapture banded and unbanded birds Then estimated population size is: P = N x T B P = Total population size N = number banded before recapture period B = recaptured that are banded n = recaptured that are unbanded T = B + n = total birds caught during the recapture date(s)

22 Acceptable conditions for population estimates of Juncos and White-throated Sparrows
Winter populations seem fairly stable from December 1 until March 1 Banded returns from earlier years are counted as unbanded for their first capture of the season Recapture period may be from 1-3 days and should have at least 5 recaptured banded birds Individual birds are only counted once during the recapture period Nets and traps are near winter feeding areas
