2 Brief history Makerere University, Kampala is Uganda's largest and third-oldest institution of higher learning. Established in 1922 as a humble technical school Later renamed Uganda Technical College with 14 students. The first courses included Carpentry, Building and Mechanics then later Medical Care, Agriculture , Veterinary Sciences and Teacher Training. Expanded over the years to become a Center for Higher Education in East Africa in 1935On July 1, 1970, Makerere became an independent national university of the Republic of Uganda, offering undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

4 Academic excellence Makerere is well known for it’s academic excellence due to the level of knowledge it provides to the students. 8 The other side of Makerere University
Frequent strikes Strikes by students, lecturers, non teaching staff. Student’s issues rotate around like bad food in halls, missing of lectures by lecturers, sudden tuition increment, sudden scrapping of some programs by the government among others. The recent strike in April by students against new polices

9 Insecurity The university is characterized dozens of unmanned entry and exit points, illegal footpaths and laxity at the three main gates into the university and Makerere University Police Post indicates a worrying trend of computer thefts. Other cases reported is theft of mobile phones, burglary, cases of stolen car parts among others. 

10 The Cases of fraud degrees These are attained through wrong or criminal deception and these affect the job market out there. Up to 69 degrees were cancelled following the findings of a university audit initiated in September which examined approximately 60,000 degrees and found that the students’ transcripts were either forged or reflected altered results.  A story on the issue of fake degrees at Makerere university. 11 Sex for marks scandals  Reports into sex for marks and sexual harassment scandals at Makerere University have implicated lecturers of unprofessional conduct due to rampant testimonies by students.  An investigation by NTV with testimonies of students sexually harassed. An illustration of how students are exploited sexually by their lecturers for marks.

12 Poor garbage disposal There is inadequate dumping of wastes as well as delays in the collection of garbage around the university. This leaves the university smelly and dirty. Garbage piles before being collected

13 NEVER THE LESS, MAKERERE UNIVERSITY REMAINS THE BEST UNIVERSITY IN UGANDA AND 5TH IN AFRICA.
