2 Author’s Introduction
1. Read the introduction to the novel, written by Mary Shelley. Take notes (in your RJ) in response to the question: Does Mary Shelley accomplish her task? What in volume I contributes to the overall “horror” of the novel? Discuss

3 Gothic Romance With a partner, review the elements of Gothic Romance on the handout Highlight/underline/circle elements that you have already seen used in Frankenstein With your partner, find three example from the book that fits one of the elements on the handout Write them in the your RJ. Discuss

4 What about the Romance? Read the elements of Romance
Look for character traits that Victor demonstrates or that have been shown in the novel so far. Write them in your RJ.

5 Victor…romantic? Victor as a Romantic character
On a quest to discover something great (dreamer) “No one can conceive the variety of feelings which bore me onwards, like a hurricane, in the first enthusiasm of success. Life and death appeared to me ideal bounds, which I should first break through…. A new species would bless me as its creator and source; many happy and excellent natures would owe their being to me” (Shelley, 55). Is he romantic? What do you think? Write your answer in your RJ. Discuss other ways Victor fits into the “romantic” (yet doomed) character role

6 Homework Pay close attention to RJ Question #4 Trace the "light" and “dark” imagery in Volume 1 -- what are the connotations of "light" and “dark” at various points in the book? Have examples written in your RJ for tomorrow. Pay special attention to chapter 5.
