Line Plots Lesson 12-1

Objectives I can construct a line plot. I can analyze a line plot.

Vocabulary line plot – a visual display of a distribution of data values where each data value is show as a dot or other mark (x) above a number dot plot – another name for line plot

Example 1 Jasmine asked her class how many pets they had. The results are shown in the table. Make a line plot of the data. Then describe the data presented in the graph. Step 1: Draw a number line. Include a title. Step 2: Place as many Xs above each number as there are responses. Step 3: Describe the data. 24 students responded to the question. No one has more than 4 pets. Four students have no pets. The mode is 2 pets.

Got It? 1. Javier asked the members of her 4-H club how many projects they were taking. The results are shown in the table. Make a line plot of the data. Then describe the data in the graph.

Example 2 Find the median and the mode of the data. Then describe the data using them. There are 16 hat prices. The median is $ This means that half of the hats cheaper than that, but half are more expensive. The mode is 50, so most of the hats cost $50.00.

Example 3 Find the range and any outliers of the data. Then describe the data using them. Range: $75-$30 = $45 $45 Looking at the line plot, you can see that 75 is an outlier.

Got It? 2. The line plot shows the number of magazines each member of the student council sold. Find the median, mode, range, and any outliers of the data. Then describe the data using them.

The range of the data is $40. The outlier is $75.
Example 4 The line plot shows the amount Connor deposited in his savings account each month. Describe the data. Include measures of center. The mean is $ The median is $ The mode is $50. So the majority of the data is close to the measures of center. The range of the data is $40. The outlier is $75.

Got It? 3. The line plot shows the prices of sweaters in a store. Describe the data. Include measures of center.

Homework Hints When it says “Describe the data. Include the measures of center and variability. “ it means… Find the median, mode, and range and state which one is the greatest.
