1 Audio Work using a q2hd handy video recorder
By Courtney Baxter

2 Sound effect 1 This is a recording of someone walking heavily down some stairs. The stairs are metal and the footsteps echo loud because of the open space. To record this sound I set the MIC angle to 60. The recording is quiet and has picked up an echo which creates a distant sound. 1. For the second recording I changed the MIC angle to 90 which makes the sound slightly louder and picks up less of an echo. 2.

3 Sound effect 2 This is a recording of some keys being shaken in the corridor. It was very loud so the quality of the sound was effected by the background noise. To record this I set the MIC angle to 60. 1. For the second recording the background noise is quieter so that all you can hear is the keys. This was set to MIC angle 90 which has muffled out the interference behind the main noise. 2.

4 Sound effect 3 This is a recording of typing keys on a keyboard in the classroom. To take this I set the MIC angle to 60. There is some background noise in this recording and the noise echoes quite a lot. 1. For the second recording I changed the MIC angle to 90. The sound became louder and sounded closer to the microphone. 2.

5 Sound effect 4 This recording is of some paper being scrunched up in the classroom. The MIC angle is set at 60 and the sound is quite quiet. The setting of the recording was quite noisy as it was during class when everyone was talking. 1. This is the same recording however the MIC angle is set at 90. The noise of the paper being scrunched is louder and clearer to hear. 2.

6 What did I get from this session
From this task I learned that there is a variety of microphones (cardioid, hyper-cardioid and omnidirectional) which pick up different types and levels of sound. Cardioid microphones are sensitive at the top and pick up very little at a 90 degree angle. Hyper-cardioid microphones are most sensitive around the sides but do not capture any sound from a 90 degree angle or the back. Omnidirectional microphones record ambient sounds. I learned that by changing the MIC angle you can alter the focus of the sound and volume levels in a recording. I found it easy to use the microphone and change the settings. Working with others made the task more interesting because I enjoy working in groups and everyone had different ideas on what to do. CARDIOID MIC HYPER-CARDIOID MIC OMNIDIRECTIONAL MIC
