1 Warm Up 10/19 Write nothing. Pull up your outline and wait for further instructions.

2 Learning Targets Today I can write the rough draft of my Invisible Man essay.

3 Today’s Procedure Review the suggested paragraph format from your outline. Figure out how you can Refine your topic sentence, Add the necessary/appropriate context to introduce your quotes, and Expand upon your commentary to make it thorough as possible in order to complete your thesis. Draft your body paragraphs. If there’s time, begin your intro./concl. paragraphs.

4 Refining your Topic Sentence
In the outline: Topic Sentence/Main idea – Excellent quote (find quote) Quick comment **Topic Sentence rewrite: using what you’ve jotted down as a basis, write a sentence here that summarizes your main point, is clear, has a hook, is short and sweet, and is reasonable.

5 Adding Context Context – Read over your quote. If necessary, read over the page where the quote is used in the book. Then, answer these questions (and use your answers to help build the context!): Where did it come from in the book? What was going on? Does that particular context only serve to explain the quote, or does it work to further expand upon Ellison’s message as indicated through the text?

6 Expanding the Commentary
Use this time to read your work with fresh eyes. Then, answer these questions to guide your expanding upon/correcting the commentary you already have: Based on your commentary, is it clear to the reader why you’ve selected the quote that you did? What does it have to do with the author’s greater purpose with writing this text (what is he trying to convey)? What does it have to do with your thesis (is this clear or does the reader have to make an inference?)Does the whole paragraph function as a convincing piece, or do you need to add more?

7 Homework Finish developing your body paragraphs by tomorrow, if you can.
